Recorded over January 1997 at Criteria Studios in Miami, Time Out of Mind is the record that pulled Bob Dylan out of a long fallow stretch and back to the front of the conversation. Daniel Lanois produced it, and you can hear him in every track: dense, weathered, swampy, the sound of a band playing at the far end of a wet room. It is an album about age and distance and running out of road, made by a man of 56 who would land in hospital with a serious heart infection within months of finishing it.

It came out on September 30, 1997, and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Most of the praise went to the long, haunted closing stretches. But the track that traveled furthest from this record was the one that sounds least like it.
