David Bowie spent a career refusing to be one person. He arrived as a slightly awkward London singer-songwriter chasing a hit, and within a few years had built a flame-haired alien rock star, killed him off on stage, and walked away to become someone else entirely. Then he did it again. And again. A soul-obsessed crooner. A frozen, suited figure with a thousand-yard stare. A Berlin recluse making cold, strange, instrumental records when the world wanted another anthem. Each version was committed to fully, then abandoned before it could curdle into a brand. Reinvention was not a marketing trick for Bowie; it was the actual work. He treated identity as material, something to be written, performed, and rewritten, and he made that restlessness feel like the point of pop music rather than a betrayal of it. The characters were never costumes hiding the man. They were how he thought out loud. Across five decades he kept finding new selves to inhabit and new sounds to chase, and he kept dragging the audience somewhere it had not asked to go. It started, though, with a single song and a single character, a figure floating at the edge of it who turned out to be more durable than anyone expected.
