SONGDIVE Music. Depth. Stories.

People remember the title track. The album around it is the more interesting story. Hotel California came out in December 1976, the Eagles’ fifth record, made in Miami and Los Angeles with producer Bill Szymczyk. It is the sound of a band changing shape in real time: Joe Walsh’s first album with them, Randy Meisner’s last, and the first to put Don Felder and Walsh side by side on lead guitar. You can hear the country-rock outfit hardening into something built for arenas. The title song took Record of the Year and the album became one of the best-selling ever made, but listen past the one everybody knows and the whole thing reads like a band staring down its own success and not entirely liking the view.
