A debut should not arrive this fully formed. Fallen came out March 4, 2003, on Wind-up, cut across California studios that autumn and winter with Dave Fortman producing, and it sold the way records used to sell: roughly ten million in the US, more than seventeen worldwide, eventually RIAA Diamond. Four singles, “Bring Me to Life,” “Going Under,” “My Immortal,” “Everybody’s Fool,” kept it on the radio for the better part of two years.

It was also a fight. The lead single’s male rap vocal, the part most people remember, was added at the label’s insistence, against Lee’s wishes; a sign of the push-and-pull running underneath the whole project. The Grammys gave it five nominations and two wins, Best Hard Rock Performance and Best New Artist. One album by a band that, at the time, was really still two people from Arkansas trying to make an unlikely thing work.
