Gotye’s third album, and the one he made almost entirely by his own hand. He wrote, produced and played most of Making Mirrors in a barn on the Mornington Peninsula, building art pop out of found sounds and patience rather than a band in a room. It is the record that produced the single that went everywhere, then won the 2013 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, an award handed to him by Prince, which is its own kind of footnote.
Look at the cover before you press play. That painting is by Frank De Backer, Gotye’s father, which tells you something about how close to home this album was made. Nothing here is outsourced; the sounds, the production, even the art on the sleeve come from inside one family’s orbit. Making Mirrors is a solo record in the fullest sense, the work of a man and the people nearest to him.
