Guns N' Roses

Guns N’ Roses formed in Los Angeles in 1985, and for a few years they were the most dangerous-sounding band in America. The classic lineup, Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler, came up out of the Sunset Strip when the Strip was all hairspray and posing, and they made everyone around them look soft by comparison. They wanted to sound like a threat. Mostly they succeeded.

Then their debut went and sold tens of millions of copies, which is not what usually happens to a band that menacing. Appetite for Destruction (1987) became one of the best-selling debut albums ever made, and the thing that pushed it over the top was, of all things, a tender song one of them had written almost by accident. That contradiction is the whole band in miniature: violence and sweetness, often in the same three minutes.

What makes them worth diving into is how little of the legend matches the paperwork. The hits did not arrive the way you assume. The famous parts were often accidents, placeholders, or things the band actively disliked. Pull any thread on this catalog and the real story is stranger than the myth. Start pulling.
