SONGDIVE Music. Depth. Stories.

Evolve arrived on June 23, 2017, but the world already knew its center of gravity. The lead single, “Believer,” had been out since February, kicking the door in months ahead of the album and setting the tone for everything behind it: bigger, harder, more electronic than the band’s first two records. Across the record the move is consistent. Drums shoved to the front, hooks built for arenas, the moodier textures of Night Visions and Smoke + Mirrors traded for something brighter and more combustible. It was a deliberate reset, and it connected commercially in a way few rock-leaning albums of the late 2010s did. The record carried a strong run of radio singles, “Thunder,” “Whatever It Takes,” “Walking the Wire,” but the song that opens its real argument is the one that arrived first. Put on “Believer” and you are hearing the sound the rest of Evolve is chasing.

Worth knowing

By the time Evolve was released, its lead single had already been climbing for nearly five months. "Believer" did not so much introduce the album as arrive long before it, a single big enough to live entirely on its own.
