Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, the fourth of seven children. By 1955 he was in Memphis with the Tennessee Two, Marshall Grant and Luther Perkins, signed to Sun Records. Cry! Cry! Cry! was the first hit. I Walk the Line came after it.
What follows reads like several careers stacked on top of one another. On January 13, 1968, he recorded At Folsom Prison live. From 1969 to 1971 he hosted The Johnny Cash Show. He stood in The Highwaymen next to Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. The Country Music Hall of Fame took him in 1980, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame followed in 1992. Two halls, two audiences, one man in the middle of both.
Then, in 1994, he released American Recordings with Rick Rubin, and the last chapter opened. It ran into the 2000s.
He married June Carter Cash. She died on May 15, 2003. He died less than four months later, on September 12, at 71.
Start with Hurt. It sits at the far end of everything above, and it changes how the whole run sounds when you go back to the beginning.
