Metallica

Metallica formed in Los Angeles in 1981, two restless outsiders, a Danish drummer who answered a classified ad and a guitarist with a borrowed amp, building something faster and uglier than the radio wanted. They moved north to the Bay Area, lost a member to the road in the worst way a band can, and kept going. For the first decade they were the most serious band in thrash: long songs, no choruses to speak of, an audience that grew by word of mouth and tape trading rather than airplay. They were not built for the mainstream and did not seem to want it.

Then came the fifth album, the black one, and the rules changed. They shortened the songs, hired an outside producer, and learned to leave space. It sold past thirty million copies and put them in living rooms that had never knowingly heard a metal record. Some of the old crowd called it a betrayal. The band called it survival, and the numbers agreed.

What holds across both eras is the seriousness. Metallica treat a riff like a structural problem to be solved, not a hook to be tossed off. The craft is the point. Everything loud about them is also deliberate.
