About six weeks were budgeted. Oasis set up in the Coach House at Rockfield, Monmouthshire, in May 1995 and worked into June, with Owen Morris and Noel Gallagher producing and Alan White on his first album with the band. Paul Weller guests on Champagne Supernova.
Creation releases it on 2 October 1995. About 345,000 copies go in the first UK week, at the time the second-fastest-selling album in UK history, behind Michael Jackson’s Bad. The first reviews are lukewarm; Q’s David Cavanagh writes that the lyrics say “nothing much about anything”. The sales are not: ten weeks at UK No. 1, No. 4 in the US, Best British Album at the 1996 Brits. Its reputation rises later. In July 2026 the Official Charts Company names it the UK’s biggest-selling studio album of all time, past Sgt. Pepper’s.
On the cover, Berwick Street in Soho. In the background, Owen Morris holds the master tape over his face.
