It is two solo albums in one sleeve. By 2003 André 3000 and Big Boi had drifted far enough apart musically that they made a double record where each man largely runs his own disc: Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx holds the funk, the bounce and the Atlanta swagger; André’s The Love Below wanders off into jazz, electro, show tunes and bedroom soul, barely a rap record at all. It should have been a mess. Instead it sold by the truckload, took Album of the Year at the Grammys, and threw off two number-one singles from opposite ends of the building. The one everybody knows lives on André’s half, dressed as the happiest song of the decade. Listen past the handclaps and the record is quietly arguing with itself about whether any of this lasts.
