The Beatles

Four young men from Liverpool who, inside roughly seven years on record, rebuilt what a popular song could be and then walked away. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr came up playing long, sweaty sets in Hamburg clubs and a cellar called the Cavern, and the discipline of those hours never quite left them. By 1963 they were a national event. By 1964 they were a global one, screamed at across stadiums, filmed, mobbed, sold.

The interesting part is what they did with that. Tired of touring into a wall of noise, they stopped playing live in 1966 and moved into the studio for good, and the studio is where they became something else. They treated the tape machine as an instrument, ran voices backward, slowed them down, layered orchestras against feedback, and made records no stage could reproduce. The songs got stranger and the audience followed.

The writing partnership at the center of it, Lennon and McCartney, is one of the most documented in music; Harrison grew into a third great writer beside them. They split in 1970. Everything after, every reissue, every argument about who mattered most, sits in the shadow of what they made between 1962 and 1969.
