My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance came out of New Jersey in 2001, and for a band that got sorted into a scene almost immediately, they spent their whole career refusing to sit still inside it. The label was emo. The reality was a band that kept reaching past it, toward theatre, toward concept records, toward the kind of ambition the genre tag was not built to hold.

Their third album is the proof. The Black Parade is a full concept record built around a dying character, complete with its own staged alter-ego band, marching brass, and a centrepiece single that critics compared, without flinching, to a Queen rock opera. It was the moment My Chemical Romance stopped being a band you described by their peers and started being a band other people got compared to.

What holds the work together is the seriousness underneath the eyeliner. They wrote about death, grief, and survival for an audience that was told those feelings were a phase, and they took that audience seriously. That is the thread. A band that looked like spectacle and meant every word of it, and built some of the most ambitious rock of its decade while everyone was busy filing it under teenage.
