The Black Parade is a concept album about a dying man, and it commits to that fully. There is a character, called the Patient, and the record follows him to the end. The conceit is that death does not come as a stranger; it comes disguised as the happiest memory of his childhood, a marching band his father once took him to see. That parade gives the album its name and its imagery, the staged alter-ego band the group performs as throughout.

It is My Chemical Romance at their most ambitious, the record where the theatre stopped being a costume and became the structure. Brass, narrative, a centrepiece single built like a rock opera in a single track. The result was the album that took them from a scene to the wider world, and the one most people still reach for first when they name the band’s best work.
