You can feel the deadline in it. The title track runs past six minutes and changes shape three times, restless and unwilling to stop. “I’m Going Slightly Mad” plays its dread as vaudeville. “These Are The Days Of Our Lives” looks back without quite saying goodbye. And then, at the very end, the closing track does the thing none of the others will: it stands up, looks straight ahead, and refuses to fall. Brian May wrote it. Freddie sang it leaning on a desk because he could no longer stand on his own. Nine months after the album came out, he was gone. Innuendo is a band working at full strength against the clock, and winning, briefly.
