SONGDIVE Music. Depth. Stories.

Two years after Pablo Honey, Radiohead are under pressure to deliver another “Creep”. They deliver this instead. John Leckie produces, starting at RAK Studios in London in February 1994, moving through Abbey Road and the Manor in Oxfordshire before finishing that November. The sessions are tense. “People from the label would visit and it got very uncomfortable,” says engineer Nigel Godrich. His first record with the band, and Stanley Donwood’s first sleeve; both have worked on every Radiohead album since. Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie mix nine of the twelve tracks. Kolderie, hearing the demos, rated every one above anything on the debut. Five singles follow, and Street Spirit (Fade Out) reaches UK No. 5: their first top five, higher than “Creep”. The album peaks at No. 4 at home and No. 88 in America, then keeps selling, quadruple platinum in the UK and platinum in the US. Coldplay and Travis were listening. OK Computer comes next.
